What is Kundalini?
Kundalini is a Sanskrit word which literally means coiled. Kundalini (that is present in every being) is an absolute reflection of the infinite energy force (called cosmic energy or supreme contentiousness or pool of transcendence) that keeps the whole universe in order. Kundalini is the primordial energy, one of the primary components of man's 'subtle body', which consists of 72,000 nadis (subtle energy channels), chakras (psychic centres), prana (subtle energy), and bindu (drops of essence). Nadis are astral tubes that carry pranic currents. They cannot be seen with the naked eye. Scientists have no idea about their existence. They are not the ordinary nerves, arteries and veins that science can see. Three Nadis are important. They are Ida, Pingala, and the Sushumna. Sushumna is the most important because Kundalini passes through this Nadi only. The first step in Kundalini Yoga is the purification of the Nadis. In fact entire process of Kundalini Yoga is about purification of 72,000 Nadis. For an average seeker (who does practice of about 45 minutes a day) it will take several decades to purify all 72,000 Nadis. When Sushumna is pure, then only will the Kundalini pass through it. In case of an average individual, Kundalini lies in a dormant state in muladhara chakra....

What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is a system of meditative techniques within ancient Indian yogic tradition that focuses on awakening of Kundalini leading to psycho-spiritual growth and the body's potential for maturation.

Kundalini yoga is considered as the King of all yogas because it is the most effective, powerful and simple yoga known to human being.

Kundalini yoga is also called as the yoga of awareness because it directly affects ones consciousness, develops intuition, increases self knowledge. Practitioners of Kundalini yoga benefit greatly from an elevation in consciousness, promotion of physical well-being and an expansion of awareness. Life is transformed into one which is happy, healthy & harmonious. Kundalani yoga is also known by other names like: Siddha yoga, Sahaj yoga, Shaktipat yoga, Maha yoga, Shakti yoga or Kriya yoga

How Kundalini can be awakened?
The Kundalini can be awakened or activated in several ways -
  • By spiritual practice - meditation, and various practices of Laya-Yoga
  • By Pranayama, Asana and Mudras by Hatha Yogis
  • By Dhyana, meditation and concentration by Raja Yogis
  • By Bhakti (devotion) and perfect self-surrender by devotees
  • By Sustained thinking, analytical will by the Gyanis (followers of Gyan Yoga)
  • By purification of Karma by Karma Yogis
  • By Japa (repetition) of Mantra (God's name)

This one is special and Effortless:
  • By grace of the Guru (preceptor). This is Spiritual transfer of energy (Grace of the Master - Guru). This path is named as Kundalini Yoga or Siddha Yoga.

Once kundalini is awakened, with consistent practice it can rise up through the central nadi, called Sushumna, that rises up inside or alongside the spine. The first step in Kundalini Yoga is the purification of the Nadis. In fact the entire process of Kundalini Yoga is about purification of 72,000 Nadis. For an average seeker (who practices for about 45 minutes a day) it will take several decades to purify all 72,000 Nadis. When Sushumna is pure, then only will the Kundalini pass through it. The progress of kundalini through the different chakras leads to different levels of awakening and mystical experiences, until the Kundalini finally reaches the top of the head, Sahasrara chakra, attaining the Self-Realization or enlightenment or moksha. When kundalini is taken to the Sahasrara (the crown of the head), when she is united with Lord Siva, perfect Samadhi (super-conscious, blissful state) ensues. Here the Yogi drinks the nectar of immortality.

Is Kundalini awakening experience always dramatic?
You will find extremely dramatic descriptions of awakening and kundalini experiences in general. I consider these people nothing more than copy-paste pundits all over the internet.

I would very much like to emphasize that the actual experience (when shaktipat is done by ABLE guru) is not (and should not be) as dramatic as it is described.

The shaktipat Guru is expected to moderate (control) the force of this kundalini rising (so that this does not become a dramatic event of awakening that is generally described in several websites)
This is where I value shaktipat by ABLE guru as best method of kundalini awakening rather then kundalini awakening by forceful efforts (asanas, pranayama etc).

The word "ABLE" in case of a shaktipat Guru is extremely important here.

Is Kundalini a Supernatural Power? Will I attain Siddhis after awakening?
The answer is Emphatic Yes and Emphatic No! Most of the people have absolutely wrong concepts about Kundalini Shakti. They think of Kundalini as some supernatural power that will grant them ability to create miracles and will provide them the healing powers. This is NOT true. Kundalini Shakti does NONE of these. The real Shaktipat Gurus NEVER use their Shakti (divine powers) for any material purpose.

Kundalini is an absolute power in the way people cannot imagine. At the same time she will NOT offer any power to the Sadhak which they are generally seeking (at least in the initial stages of spiritual development that lasts for several decades to several lives). Having awakened Kundalini is like being a child of a billionaire who has right to all the wealth of the father but has no access to the wealth. This billionaire doesn’t show his wealth to the world and makes the child work hard to understand the value of money. Kundalini is just like that billionaire and Sadhak is a child who has no access to wealth more than what is absolutely necessary. Go figure it out! SmileyFace

Siddhis will come on their own in extremely advanced stage of Siddha Yoga, where the person has attained Vairagya (dispassion, indifference, nonattachment) with Viveka (discrimination & wisdom) where there are no desires left in him. Siddhis and desires are mutually exclusive – meaning you cannot have Siddhis as long as there is a last desire left within you. Siddhis can come only when ocean of desires, Vasana (subtle desires), attachment and ownership has dried completely and there are no waves of Vrttis (thought waves) left on the ocean.

In simple words Kundalini WILL NOT give any Siddhis (supernatural divine powers) to practitioner of Siddha Yoga. Kundalini is all about cleaning of the Pranamaya Kosha (72,000 Nadis or subtle energy channels carrying Prana) that eventually leads to Self-Realization. Kundalini has very little to do with your external or material life.

At the same time, Kundalini will show you many miracles on the way to the God. But Kundalini does not give “Powers of Miracles” to Sadhak. The only right of Sadhak is to “experience” the miracles, not to “show miracles” to the world. Remember there are only 3 entities on the way to God – Its “Sadhak, Guru and God” everything else is an illusion – that which does not exist. Entire spiritual journey happens within (inside you.)

Short answer: Don’t waste your time after Kundalini if you are looking for Siddhis or some sort of Psychic powers. Siddha Yoga is NOT for YOU! SmileyFace

Does Kundalini give Power of Healing?
It is true that the whole purpose of Kundalini is healing and cleaning within that eventually leads to Self-Realization (union with the ONE). It is also true that healing starts the day Kundalini is awakened. The process goes upto correcting the DNAs of human body (Karma corrections) which is not possible even for the medical sciences.

At the same time it should be noted that the healing itself is NOT the objective of Kundalini. Healing is only a natural by-product of the process of cleaning on the way to the Self-Realization.

Many people think that after Kundalini awakening they will get a great power of healing. That is absolutely WRONG. The process of healing of deceases is totally controlled and guided by the Kundalini herself. In fact there will be times in this journey where the Kundalini will create the physical disturbances (in order to remover bigger obstacles in the future).

Kundalini DOES HEAL, but she does it in her own way not your way. The reins always remain in the hands of Shakti and not with the Sadhak. She never gives the power of healing to the Sadhak. The sadhak has no control on the process of healing. Those seeking “power of healing” should desist from this path. They will be disappointed eventually.

Kundalini is all about “Union with the Divine” where physical body of the sadhak plays limited role as a “tool” to achieve the ultimate goal of Self-Realization. Kundalini is not about “Healing of the deceases”. If Sadhak is destined to get the Cancer as per his Karma, he will get it. The Kundalini may provide him enough strength to deal with the Cancer in the best possible way.

Will I get health benefits from Kundalini yoga?
Yes, you sure will get the health benefits from Kundalini yoga because healing is but a natural process of Siddha yoga. At the same time it should be remembered that healing is not the objective of the Kundalini yoga, but it is just the by-product of Kundalini yoga.

Once Kundalini is awakened her primary job (and continuing job) is to cleanse our subtle channels and various layers of abnormalities in our system so that her path is clear for the ascent towards the Sahasradhar chakra.

Purpose of awakening of Kundalini is to attain the Moksha or Chaitanya. Therefore, to practice techniques aimed at actively awakening kundalini with the goal of improving your health is a misuse of these powerful techniques. At the same time there is certainly nothing wrong with trying to improve your health using these techniques.

How Kundalini travels through various chakras?
As the kundalini rises, its energy is transformed into various vibrations, corresponding to each individual chakra (ie. it is lowest at the Root Chakra and highest at the Crown Chakra.)

List of Chakras:

Mooladhara (or Root Chakra) - Red Color - Located at the perineum and below the Cowper's glands (a.k.a. bulbourethal glands in males) and Bartholin's glands (in females)
Swadhisdhana (or Pelvic Chakra) - Orange Color - Located in the base of the spine and related to the testes (in males) and ovaries (in females)
Manipura (or Navel Chakra) - Yellow Color - Located in the spine, back of the navel and adrenal glands
Anahata (or Heart Chakra) - Pink Color - Located in the spine, back of the heart
Vishuddhi (or Throat Chakra) - Blue Color - Located in the spine, back of the pit of the throat and thyroid gland
Ajna (or Third Eye Ckakra) - Purple or Violet Color - located in between the eye brows and center of the head, where the pineal gland is located
Sahasrara (or Crown Chakra) - Purple, Violet or White Color - located at the top of the head and above the pituitary gland

Here is a brief description of how Kundalini travels through chakras:
  • When the kundalini is awakened in a person, it moves on to the Sacral (2nd) chakra, which corresponds to the physical spleen, and through it, vitalizes the whole astral body
  • Then it moves on to the Solar Plexus (3rd) chakra, vivifying it, awakening in the astral body the power of feeling, a sensitivity to all sorts of influences
  • Then it moves on to the Heart (4th) chakra, which when awakened endows the person with a power to comprehend and sypathize with the vibrations of other astral entities in a way that they can instinctively understand something of their feelings
  • Then it moves on to the Throat (5th) chakra, awakening / activating it, giving the person the power of hearing on the astral plane
  • Then it moves on to the 6th - Third Eye chakra, which when developed and awakened (activated) produces astral sight
  • Finally, when it awakens or activates the Crown - Third Eye (7th) chakra, which corresponds to the top of the head, it completes the astral life.
Important note: You read these lines in one minute, but the actual process of this self-realization take several lives to attain (yes, I do mean several-lives)

What is the difference between Prana and Kundalini?
God’s energy that is running the universe is Chaitanya (Divine, Cosmic consciousness, Absolute Purity or Super Soul).

With respect to a person, this Chaitanya is known as Chetanaa (this is what we refer to when we say God is within me) and it is that part of God’s energy required for the functioning of the human being.

Chetanaa is of two types:

Active Chetanaa – Also known as prana-shakti or vital energy. The vital energy gives energy to the physical body, mind, intellect and ego. This is visible manifestation of the God's energy.

Non-active Chetanaa – This is known as the Kundalini. Kundalini lies dormant in a person (at the base of Spine) until activated. Kundalini is forced into a dormant state by the layers of Vikar (Lust, Rage, Greed, Attachment, Ego) and Sanchit Karma.

In short,

Active Chetanaa        = Prana or Vital energy
Non-active Chetanaa = Kundalini

What is the difference between qi or chi and Kundalini?
The Chinese concept of qi or chi can be identified with the concept of Prana, but NOT the Kundalini. See the difference between Prana and Kundalini in the question above.

What is the difference between the other energies that we know of (like heat, electricity etc) and the Kundalini energy?
Even though Kundalini is considered as an energy (cosmic energy absolutely vital to life), Kundalini is also an “intelligent energy" (very concentrated field of intelligence) that has access to your subtle body (where all our Samskaras are stored) and she also has an ability of creation (the same ability that is carried by Chaitanya) - meaning: Kundalini knows million more things about you than you know about yourself. She knows what is better for you and your spiritual future. (All this may sound little exaggerated but that is how it is). Kundalini is like your mother (this again is not full description because mother is still insufficient as compared to kundalini.) This is one of the primary reasons why a sadhak should let Kundalini do what she does after her awakening (by the grace of an ABLE shaktipat Guru)

Where can I find a Siddha Guru?
It is very important to understand that a Siddha Guru is not an ordinary human being. He is the one who has travelled path of Siddha yoga upto the pinnacle point of the human life - The enlightenment or Moksha. In fact he has reached even a stage further where he has been bestowed the ability to awaken the kundalini of other beings. Such a Guru is in an eternal state of Chaitanya, where he can use the universal cosmic energy to awaken the Kundalini of deserving individuals.

A Siddha Guru is not easily accessible. Only if you have earned good karma over many births, will one bless you. Sometimes even if the Siddha Guru is easily accessible and very close to you, it may happen that one might not be willing to take the Deeksha. This happens when the karma base is not sufficiently strong (cleanzed enough) for the individual to get initiated in this path.

At the same time one thig is extremely certain. If the fruit is ripe it must fall down. That means, if an individual's Karma is good enough and the Sattva gun is there at the required level within, the seeker WILL meet the Guru. That may or may not be an intended action on your behalf.

I see many offeres of shaktipat awakening on the internet, should I choose one?
I strongly recomment: DO NOT believe in those internet shakti Gurus and kundalini masters that offer PAID shaktipat awakenings and enlightenment in days. As explained above, you will find extremely dramatic descriptions of awakening and kundalini experiences in general. Such self-claimed kundalini masters and shaktipat Gurus need to be scrutinized very carefully. Here is two important points you should consider while doing research for Shaktipat guru on the web.

  • DO NOT even contact anyone who offers PAID shaktipat. I call all quack gurus.
  • DO NOT believe in those who put all dramatic descriptions of kundalini shaktipat and awakenings. There is high chance that they are fake.

An ABLE shaktipat Guru is expected to moderate (control) the force of this kundalini rising (so that this does not become a dramatic event.)

In the world of Internet there are 100 Fake Gurus against only one Genuine Guru. In fact real Gurus are as rare as one in millions people. Take extreme care while choosing one. Please read a shocking account of a Fake Guru informed by one of the visitors.

Types of shaktipat Gurus and shakti masters (especially those available on the internet)
There are five types of Gurus available on the internet

  • Copy-Paste gurus that do not have knowledge not have experienced anything divine
  • Knowledge Gurus: that only have knowledge but have not put the knowledge in to practice (Divine is about application and seeing the God thru gyan-chakshus, not having knowledge of the Divine)
  • The Gurus who have knowledge and also have done an application (its okay to get knowledge from these but not Shaktipat)
  • The ABLE Gurus that have fully applied their knowledge to attain the self-realization
  • The ABLE Gurus that have attained the the Divine Awareness (or the salvation or The Bliss, Sat-Chit-Ananda, Chaitanya, Moksha, Supreme Awareness, Supreme Consciousness or Super-Soul). and who are permitted to give shaktipat deeksha by his/her Guru.

Who is my Kundalini Shaktipat Guru?
The ABLE Gurus that have attained the the Divine Awareness (or the salvation or The Bliss, Sat-Chit-Ananda, Chaitanya, Moksha, Supreme Awareness, Supreme Consciousness or Super-Soul) and who are permitted to give shaktipat deeksha by his/her Guru is the ONLY genuine Guru whom I call ABLE Guru.

I wish everyone seeking a Shaktipat Guru finds a Guru as described above.

Yoga is an exact science. It aims at the harmonious development of body, mind and soul. Everyone should follow one Yoga as their primary Yoga (based on their character). Then we must combine Karma Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. This “Yoga Synthesis” will lead one to the God.
