Q & A: Methods of Praying (Bhakti - Upasana) of Swami Samarth

Can you please inform me how I need to pray to Shri Akkalkot Swami Samarth? I could not get any information on Google. I do not have a Guru.

Anand (Name changed), Australia

Here are my thoughts:

It is good to know about your interest in praying (worshiping) Shri Swami Samarth. Even if you do not have Guru, in my view, you are very much on the right path. You can consider Shri Swam Samarth as your Guru and he will guide you in the right direction.

The primary keys in Shri Swami Samarth Bhakti are Swami Naam/Jaap, Swami Seva, Swami Anusandhan and Spiritual reading.

Here are few things you can do to maintain and increase your bhakti towards Shri Swami Samarth:

Shri Swami Samarth Upasana (worship)

  • First try to get Shri Swami Samarth photo in your Puja Ghar. You can buy his photo from India or see if you can buy it online. If you can buy his original photo it will be good (see Swami’s first original photo taken by Kodak company). If this photo is not available, you can buy some other photo.

  • You can start doing daily meditation of Shri Swami. 10 minutes a day sitting before Shri Swami photo is sufficient initially. You can increase the time slowly. 5 minutes every 3 months is good enough. It is important to maintain the consistency of meditation rather than doing it for longer time every day. Consistent (daily) worship of smaller duration is much better than longer duration worship occasionally (once a week)

  • When you perform daily meditation you should also do Shri Swami Jaap/Naam - "Maharaj Shri Swami Samarth Jai Jai Swami Samarth, Shri Swami Samartha Jai Jai Swami Samarth!!" (visit video link Swami Samarth: Mantra, Bhajan, Aartis, Jaap, Naam: Video Collection)

  • Start reading about Swami literature at least one page every day. That will bring stability and direction to your thoughts to some extent. You can get Swami Charitra from Pune. I suppose it should be available online too.

  • Do every effort that will help you increase your faith in Shri Swami Samarth.

  • Anusandhan – the awareness of his presence in everything you do. This is not an easy process and takes several years/decades to attain the state. But this state of mind can be achieved only when we take one step at a time.

  • Have absolute faith that Shri Swami Samarth that he is never away from you (absolutely never). Every moment he is with you as long as you are able to stay in his anusandhan. He is away from you only when you are away from him (actually in those situations too he is there behind you.)

  • Try to devote your karma-phala (fruit of your actions) to Shri Swami Samarth. Non-ownership of Karma-phala is primary goal of karma yoga.

  • Seva (service) at Shri Swami Samarth math is another important action you can do. But since you are in Australia, Swami math may not be accessible. In case you are in Melbourne I know one place where Shri Swami Samarth Bhakti group assemble every week.

Here is one more page that will give you more details about Swami upasana (worship). This type of upasana is very difficult to attain on a regular basis. But if you can achieve some of purity mentioned on the page that will help you immensely. 3 days Swami upasana

In my view Bhakti-yoga is the supreme yoga. God loves Bhakti-yoga and bhakti-yogis the most. So if you can develop bhakti towards Shri Swami that will be wonderful thing for your spiritual progress.

Shri Swami Samarth is an incarnation of Dattatreya (called Purnavatar in Marathi). So your worship of Shri Swami is no different than the worship of Divine Trinity Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh-Shiva.

Wishing you the best in your devotion and spiritual progress.

Thank you.

Yoga is an exact science. It aims at the harmonious development of body, mind and soul. Everyone should follow one Yoga as their primary Yoga (based on their character). Then we must combine Karma Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. This “Yoga Synthesis” will lead one to the God.
