Happiness is our nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside - Ramana Maharshi

Q & A: Discomfort, pain, sleeplessness after shaktipat initiation?

Can awakened kundalini give lot of discomforts, pain, sleeplessness even when it is a shaktipat initiation? If all the sensations are on the right hand side, how to set it right?

Arundhati (Name changed), India

Answer to your first question - Can awakened kundalini give lot of discomforts, pain, sleeplessness even when it is a shaktipat initiation? - Yes, it is possible even whenit is shaktipat initiation, but there is no set rule to identify exactly if this is result of shaktipat or otherwise (unless shaktipat Guru shares the information)

Let me give you the reasoning behind it:

Kundalini awakening happens to cleanse our physical and subtle system

The fact is, not all kundalini (shaktipat) experiences are identical to those classical shaktipat awakenings experienced explained in siddha yoga, but most of the times vary in intensity and duration. Every shaktipat result varies in terms of experiences and intensity (starting from absolutely no experiences to extreme experiences during and after shaktipat).

Basically, when the Kundalini arises (is awakened during shaktipat), her ("her" because she is "Shakti") primary objective and process is (and remains so for several years) to cleanse our physical body and more of the subtle body (where the impressions of our Samskaras are stored).

Consider this process like cleaning of stored water. When the water is stored in a container all dirt is settled at the bottom and water appears clean. But when the cleaning process starts, the water is disturbed and becomes dirty until cleaning is complete and the dirt is removed from water (or the water is replaced).

Also consider an example of a water hose sitting in a yard that is not used for several years. When you start water thru the hose it starts jumping because of water pressure (depending how much knotted or blocked or tangled it is) More tangled/knotted the hose (deep Samskaras and karmas from past lives) the more the reactions of the hose (because force of the water [kundalini Shakti], and the knotted hose [Samskaras and karmas] are working against each other)

Shaktipat kundalini awakening is a similar process. But unlike the above examples Kundalini process continues for several years, decades or even lives depending on the Samskaras, Karma and Trigunas of the Sadhak.

Shaktipat kriyas are result of Kundalini awakening

All the shaktipat kriyas that are experienced by the Sadhak are the result of the above cleansing process that starts with shaktipat awakening. The Kriyas or symptoms include involuntary body movements and postures, pain, abnormal breathing patterns, vibrating sensations, hot and cold sensations, inner sounds, such as roaring, whistling, and chirping, insomnia, unusual or extremes of emotions, distortion of thought processes, detachment and so on that start with shaktipat initiation.

Kundalini when activated through shaktipat, opens new pathways in our nervous (nadi) system, the pain associated with this apparently is due to the nervous system's inability to immediately cope-up with the gushing energy. At the same time, it is generally expected that when shaktipat happens the Guru moderates the intensity of the shaktipat experiences (again there is no such rule that it must happen that way. The ABLE Guru is no different than the God and he should be able to moderate the forceful reaction of the kundalini. We as human beings should not try to judge the Guru.)

Having said all this, let me also tell you that, this is a description of general process that happens after shaktipat (or is supposed to happen) for an average Sadhak. But Samskaras, karma and trigunas in the subtle body of every sadhak are absolutely different. Therefore, I can not tell whether shaktipat experiences of discomforts, pain, sleeplessness are because of Kundalini kriyas after awakening or they are because of physical/psychological issues occurring at the same time of kundalini awakening. The best person to answer this question is the Guru who has given the shaktipat.

Your second question: if all the sensations are on the right hand side, how to set it right? – We can not, its Kundalini’s effort to fix something existing.

Kundalini is an intelligent energy that knows us better than we do

In my view, Kundalini is an intelligent energy, meaning: Kundalini knows million more things about us than we know about ourselves. She knows what is better for the seeker and their spiritual future. (All this may sound little exaggerated but that is how it is)

I do not know if there is any way to set right the sensations if all the sensations are on the right hand side. The way I see it is - The Kundalini is needing to continue her action in right side more than the left side.

There are two ways one can cope with this - 1) Take a break from the meditation. Always remember - The Kundalini can work ONLY if we let her work. She can not work if we stop her activation even after shaktipat. (This is the case most of the times. There may be rare examples of Kundalini taking full control of the Sadhak) 2) Ask the Guru who gave Shaktipat and he may be able to give better explanation.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

Q & A: Discomfort, pain, sleeplessness after shaktipat initiation? Topics: Kundalini and Shaktipat initiation

Yoga is an exact science. It aims at the harmonious development of body, mind and soul. Everyone should follow one Yoga as their primary Yoga (based on their character). Then we must combine Karma Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. This “Yoga Synthesis” will lead one to the God.
